What is direct casting with castable resin?
Direct casting is a technique where the piece printed in castable resin goes straight to the flask, without the intermediate step of rubber mold production or wax injection. The resin burns away completely during heating, leaving the void space that will be filled by molten metal.
Advantages of direct casting with resin
No intermediate steps: from STL file directly to metal. High fidelity to the original design: textures, fillets and complex geometries preserved with precision. Ideal for fine jewelry: hollow, lightweight pieces with lattice structures and organic lines impossible to produce in traditional wax. Reduced rework.
Which resin to use?
The resin needs to be castable — it must burn away completely without leaving residues that contaminate the metal. The most used are Formlabs, Phrozen and similar castable lines, with burnout cycles between 750°C and 900°C.
