How to prepare an STL file for mass production without losing details

The file that looked ready — but wasn't

One of the most expensive mistakes in digital jewelry making is starting a print or sending a file to production without proper validation. The result can be hours of lost printing time, wasted resin, a failed casting — or worse: a batch of off-spec pieces that only appear after finishing.

Preparing an STL file correctly is fast once you know what to check. This guide from MS Soluções para Joalheria covers the entire process — from modeling to validated export.

What is an STL file and why does it matter

STL (Stereolithography) is the standard format for 3D printing. It represents the surface of an object with a mesh of triangles. The quality of the STL — resolution, mesh integrity, and scale — directly determines the quality of the printed and cast piece.

Step 1: Check mesh integrity

Before any export, verify that the 3D model is free of: open edges (gaps in the mesh where two triangles do not close completely); inverted faces (normals pointing inward, which confuse the printer); duplicate geometries (two surfaces exactly overlapping); non-manifold geometry (an edge shared by more than two triangles).

In Rhinoceros: 'CheckMesh' command. In ZBrush: 'Tool > Geometry > Check'. In Meshmixer (free): 'Analysis > Inspector'. Any error listed must be corrected before export.

Step 2: Verify minimum thicknesses

Use your software's thickness analysis tool to confirm that no region is below the minimum for your chosen process. Critical regions: stone settings, connecting fillets, hollow piece walls, and edges of organic designs.

Reference: for SLA printing with jewelry resin, the absolute minimum thickness is 0.5mm. For subsequent casting, correct to 0.8mm to account for metal shrinkage.

Step 3: Set the correct scale

STL does not store measurement units — only numerical dimensions. The printer interprets the values as millimeters by default. Before exporting, confirm that the model is in millimeters in the software, not centimeters or inches.

Tip: create a 10x10x10mm reference cube next to the model for quick scale validation at the printer. Discard the cube after confirming.

Step 4: Export with adequate resolution

STL resolution is defined by the triangular deviation tolerance. The smaller the tolerance, the more triangles — the more faithful to the curve, and the larger the file.

For fine jewelry: use a tolerance of 0.005mm to 0.01mm. This generates files between 5MB and 50MB — a size easily managed by modern slicers. Avoid 'fast' or 'low resolution' settings — the time saved on export is paid for with hours at the workbench correcting the cast piece.

Step 5: Validate in the slicer before printing

Open the file in the slicer (ChituBox, Lychee, PreForm) and verify: correct scale; absence of invalid geometry alerts; layer preview — confirm that initial layers have a solid adhesion base; positioning and supports — for jewelry, always position the largest plane parallel to the FEP to maximize adhesion and minimize peel forces.

Step 6: Printing parameters for jewelry

Each resin has specific parameters, but general principles for jewelry are: layer thickness from 0.025mm to 0.05mm for maximum resolution; exposure time according to the resin manufacturer — castable resins typically require more exposure than standard resins; vat temperature between 25°C and 35°C for better resin flow during printing.

Conclusion: Correct STL, production without rework

The 6 steps in this guide take less than 30 minutes for any project — and save hours of rework and loss from wasted material. In mass production, this validation before each batch is the difference between profit and loss.
